Redskins Depth Chart: Final Prediction
Quarterbacks:
Kirk Cousins
Colt McCoy
Head Coach Jay Gruden announced that he would start Kirk Cousins for the 2015 season over RGIII and McCoy. McCoy has been taking reps with the second string while Griffin has been with the third team after Gruden’s decision. Even though they said they will keep Robert Griffin III, I don’t believe they actually will. Once he’s cleared by the doctor to play, I believe he will be released. There’s not really a good reason to keep him as of now; he would just become a distraction at the bottom of the depth chart. It would be a fresh start for both sides.

Running Backs
(Fullbacks):
Alfred Morris
Matt Jones
Chris Thompson
Trey Williams
Darrel Young (FB)
Alfred Morris, Matt Jones, and Darrel Young are a lock to be on the 53-man roster. While Thompson and Williams have been duking it out for the ‘last’ spot, they will both end up making the squad in this situation since they will only be carrying two QBs. Both of them have been very impressive this offseason and can bring the change of pace the offense needs at running back. People in the organization like Williams, but many do not think they can sneak him on to the practice squad without another team scooping him up.

Wide Receivers:
DeSean Jackson
Pierre Garcon
Andre Roberts
Jamison Crowder
Ryan Grant
Rashad Ross
Evan Spencer
This year I have the Redskins keeping seven receivers. The first five are a lock to make it on the roster while Ross and Spencer are the last two to make it on. If the Redskins went with six receivers they would most likely decide between these two. Rashad Ross has shown a lot of improvement this offseason. He led the NFL with 25 receptions, 266 yards, and 4 touchdowns. And on the other hand Evan Spencer has been really impressive in special teams work and has done some good things in the passing attack, but he did have a problem with dropping balls too often. So if they did go that route and only keep six they would have to choose between a speedster who would really only see the field if DeSean Jackson was injured or a wide receiver who can play special teams which is something the Redskins are lacking at the position (although Ross can also return kicks).

Tight Ends:
Jordan Reed
Derek Carrier
Je’Ron Hamm
If Reed can stay healthy for the whole season this position group will become a strong positional group. But that’s the problem, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy throughout his career as he’s missed 12 games in two seasons. After trading a 2017 5th-round pick to the 49ers for tight end Derek Carrier he should most likely make the roster. In the final preseason game vs the Jaguars on a 4th and 7 he had the ball knocked out of his hands after being hit pretty good in the back, if he would have held on, it would have gave the Redskins a first down and could have set up a game winning field goal. Je’Ron Hamm has had some good plays in preseason games so far, but would be one of the last ones on the roster if he makes it. With tackle Tom Compton also working at tight end, Hamm could become a practice squad candidate incase Carrier or Reed went down with an injury. It could also open up a spot at another roster spot as well.

Defensive Line:
Jason Hatcher
Terrance Knighton
Stephen Paea
Ricky Jean-Francois
Chris Baker
Frank Kearse
One of the stronger position groups on the team now, I had them only keeping six players here so there would be room for an extra wide receiver. Jean-Francois, Baker, Kearse can line up on the ends and at tackle and should rotate in every once in a while. The Redskins could decide to go a different way with the last spot, but I think they will keep Kearse because of the potential he showed last season recording three sacks during the regular season.

Middle Linebackers:
Keenan Robinson
Perry Riley
Will Compton
Martrell Spaight
Keenan Robinson is the play caller and the best MLB on the defense. Riley could be feeling pressure for his starting job, but should still be given his roster spot. Will Compton has been out most of the training camp and preseason with an injury, but considering their other options, Compton is the most experience and should also get a spot. Fifth-round pick Martrell Spaight did some good things in preseason games so far, but showed he still needs time to improve in a few places. I wouldn't count out Terrance Plummer though, he could possibly sneak onto the roster.

Outside Linebackers:
Ryan Kerrigan
Preston Smith
Trent Murphy
Jackson Jeffcoat
Ryan Kerrigan signed a five-year extension in the offseason so he’ll have no problem making it on the roster. Former second-round picks Preston Smith and Trent Murphy have competed for the starting spot across from Kerrigan, but it still has not been announced who will start. They should both make the roster. The last spot will be between Jackson Jeffcoat and Houston Bates. Jeffcoat is tied for the most sacks this preseason with four and Bates is fifth in the league with 3. Both played well in coverage also with Jeffcoat intercepting a pass and Bates having a nice pass breakup against a tight end. I went with Jackson Jeffcoat in this situation because I think the Redskins might have a shot getting Bates on the practice squad. Jeffcoat also showed he has a ton of potential creating plays near the end of the regular season last year.

Cornerbacks:
Chris Culliver
DeAngelo Hall
Bashaud Breeland
David Amerson
Justin Rogers
After signing Culliver in free agency he will be the Redskins top corner entering the year. They also restructured DeAngelo Hall’s contract in the offseason, and he should be the starting cornerback opposite of Hall. Bashaud Breeland sprained his MCL early in training camp and has been out until he returned last night. He had to shake off some rust but he will take over the slot roll after week one as he is suspended for the first game. 2013 second round pick David Amerson will play the backup roll to Culliver and Hall. Amerson had some ups and downs during some preseason games but will make it on to the roster this season. Justin Rogers also had some ups and downs during preseason but one played stood out as he chased down the kick returner and stopped him short of the goal line and later resulted in a turnover. Rogers will be tasked with covering the slot for the first game of the season for Breeland.

Safeties:
Duke Ihenacho
Dashon Goldson
Jeron Johnson
Kyshoen Jarrett
Trenton Robinson
Duke Ihenacho has been very impressive this offseason and will start opposite of one of the leaders on defense in Dashon Goldson. Jeron Johnson signed a two-year deal with the Redskins earlier this year and will play behind Ihenacho. Kyshoen Jarrett has shown his potential and versatility the past four game too. He can play both safety spots and has worked in the slot this offseason. Trenton Robinson is a special team’s ace and even if they only keep four at this position they should consider keeping Robinson for his special team’s ability and experience.

Kirk Cousins Named Starter For the 2015 Season
After giving three first round picks and a second rounder to the St. Louis Rams to trade up to the second overall pick to get Heisman Trophy winner quarterback Robert Griffin III in the 2012 NFL draft, head coach Jay Gruden announced that they will start former Michigan State quarterback and 2012 fourth round pick, Kirk Cousins, for the 2015 season over Griffin.
Griffin brought the Redskins back to the playoffs during his rookie season for the first time in a long time and won the Rookie of the Year award. But during the wild card round vs the Seahawks, RGIII tore his ACL for the second time in his career, after first tearing it during his college years. After the season Robert Griffin reportedly told former head coach Mike Shanahan that he wanted to be a pocket passer and the team owner Dan Snyder was on board with him. But Shanahan (a two-time Super Bowl champion) knew Griffin would not succeed as a pocket passer—as that is not a strong skill of his. Mike Shanahan however still went with what the quarterback wanted and it turned out the way he thought—the Redskins went 3-13 during the 2013 season, and head coach Mike Shanahan was fired. So Snyder brought in Jay Gruden who is known for his pocket quarterback preference and his offensive scheme around them and he was tasked with the job of making Griffin into a pocket quarterback. The problem was however, Gruden quickly realized himself that RGIII would not succeed sitting in the pocket. But he gave Griffin last season and this offseason to prove he could be a pocket passer, but RGIII didn't show any improvement as it didn’t show up in practice or in games. The organization gave Gruden the decision on what to do with the quarterback position and he decided that Kirk Cousins gave them the best chance to win. However, Gruden said “the door is not shut on Robert Griffin."
The Redskins have three options with Robert Griffin III—they can trade him, cut him, or keep him. As of now the speculation (and most likely possibility) is to release him, but they cannot do so until he is cleared from his concussion (as teams can’t release injured players). If Griffin does get waived, because he’s not a vested veteran (3 years of service), he’ll have to go through waivers. The Redskins have explored trade options though, but haven’t received a lot of interest as they are only getting 5th and 6th round offers.
Possible landing spots for Griffin if he was released or traded would include: the Cowboys, Chiefs, Saints, Jets, Browns, Texans, Bills, Cardinals, and Eagles. Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones has expressed interest in Griffin in the past and said he’d like Griffin III on his team if he had the chance, as he stated he will never forget the 2012 Thanksgiving game and believes that he can get back to that form. The Saints have already started looking for options to replace Drew Brees when he decides to retire, and it would make since for Griffin to go back home where he grew up for some of his life. The Jets, Browns, Texans, and Bills all have oblivious quarterback issues and could possibly see if they could recapture his career. Also some of those teams had some interest in him coming out of college and might still see a future for him. The Chiefs, however, would be the best case scenario for Griffin. Head coach Andy Reid tried to trade up for RGIII in the 2012 draft when he was the coach of the Eagles. Reid’s offense would be a good fit for Griffin III and could help jump start his career back up, as he did with Michael Vick’s. He would likely have to stay behind Alex Smith for a few seasons, so he’d have to be patient, but it could help his career in the long run. Update: Cowboys, Eagles, and Browns are interested in Robert Griffin III if Redskins cut him according to B/R.
The Redskins picked quarterback Kirk Cousins in the fourth round of the 2012 draft and a lot of people didn’t agree with the decision, but it might have not been a bad move in the long run. During his rookie season he started vs the Cleveland Browns in place of an injured Robert Griffin III and helped win the game to keep their playoff hopes alive. In the 2013 season Cousins was named as the starter for the rest of the 2013 season, but lost the final four games. After Robert Griffin III dislocated his ankle in the 2014 season, Cousins replaced him and lead the team to a win over the Jaguars in the 2nd game. But was later making too many mistakes and was turning the ball over late in the games and was benched for Colt McCoy in the middle of the season. In the offseason he worked out with Jon Gruden, the older brother of head coach Jay Gruden to try to get an edge over the other quarterbacks. During training camp and preseason games this season, Kirk Cousins showed a lot of improvement moving around the pocket and getting the ball out when he needed to. In the third preseason game Cousins threw an interception and fumbled a snap early in the game, and in the past Cousins would hang his head and would lose his confidence, but this year—so far—Cousins has responded well, has got back into the game, made plays, and hasn't lost his confidence. This preseason Kirk Cousins has a QB rating of 140.2 when under pressure according to Pro Football Focus. Jay Gruden felt Kirk Cousins was the best option at quarterback this season and felt like he deserved to start. Others in the organization believe Cousins could be the future franchise QB and wanted to start him to see if he could possibly fit that roll. Also, many others think Cousins turnover issues have been because he was trying to hard and overthinking things because he knew when he filled in for RGIII he had a ton of pressure on him to be perfect because he thought he couldn't keep the job otherwise. So by naming him the starter for the 2015 season he wont have the feeling that he has to be perfect and do everything to keep the job.
Former head coach Mike Shanahan praised the decision to go with ‘Franchise QB’ Kirk Cousins as the starter; says “he will be a top 10 QB.” Others have even said prior to the NFL draft they had Kirk Cousins away ahead of his draft position and even ranked him as a late first rounder.

News And Notes From Final Practices At Training Camp
- David Amerson and Jeron Johnson both returned to practice last Saturday but did not partake in full-team work.
- Jay Gruden said Logan Pulsen will indeed have season-ending surgery for turf toe. The Redskins will only have one tight end (Jordan Reed) who was on there roster last season.
- OLB Junior Galette joined practice this week and has looked really explosive and has stayed really low at the snap. He took over for Trent Murphy in most third down situations. He took a few snaps at right end in nickel situations also. He would have gotten to the
- Jordan Reed is also back at practice and said he was hopeful to play in the 2nd preseason game vs the Lions, but head coach Jay Gruden said he wouldn't play in it even if it were a regular season game. As he is still recovering from his hamstring injury.
- Rookie guard Brandon Scherff is still showing a lot of what he’s know for: Power. He often lets defenders get into his chest, but has enough power to not get driven back.
- The Redskins worked out 3 tight ends in the afternoon on Sunday. They ended up signing two of them in Ernst Brun Jr. and Ex-5th round pick (2011) of the Green Bay Packers D.J. Williams. Williams won the Mackey Award for being the nations top tight end while attending Arkansas. During his two year stint with Green Bay, he appeared in 26 games and caught nine passes. He was out of football this past season however. Burn has not played since his senior season at Iowa State in 2013. He was slowed by injuries that season though, as he only caught 6 passes in 8 games. During his junior season he caught 32 passes for 377 yards and 6 touchdowns. Burn made an impressive one-handed reception near the sideline during Monday’s practice cession.
- Gruden said Ryan Grant is their best pure route-runner. Only issue for him is playing time. As the guys ahead of him are DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garçon.
- Cornerback DeAngelo Hall went off to the side with the trainers during Monday’s practice, but did not look like a serious injury. He is considered day-to-day with a left toe injury is hoping to play Thursday.
- During Bruce Allen’s press conference he said “there is not a leading candidate” for the new stadium developments. Allen was then asked if the team name is a barrier to building a stadium in D.C., would they reconsider their stance [on their name]. Allen responded with “No.”
- DeSean Jackson and Jamison Crowder wont play tonight vs the Detroit Lions. Which is not a surprise considering Jackson has not practiced and Crowder just returned to practice this week. Though it does sound like Crowder has a good shot at playing in the third preseason game. Gruden is hoping Jackson will be able to play also, but is still recovering from the separated shoulder he suffered in the joint practice with the Texans.
- The Redskins have given outside linebacker Trevardo Williams (on injured reserve) an injury settlement, and is now a free agent.
Preseason Week One Highlights vs Browns (Part Two)
The pass rush did look a lot better even without the best pass rushers on the team in Kerrigan and Galette, but their secondary issues continue.
Kirk Cousins made nice adjustments throughout the game stepping up in the pocket and moving around to extend plays. He made a nice throw to Andre Roberts just as pressure arrived, Roberts made an excellent adjustment and snagged a contested catch for a big gain. Cousins showed his Johnny Manziel impression when he ran a read option and faked the whole defense out for a touchdown run. Rookie kicker Ty Long made the 33 yard extra point.
During a run, Silas Redd Jr. had is leg planted in the ground while two Browns players take him to the ground and his leg twisted the other way gruesomely. Trainers put a big cast on his right leg and was carted off the field. Redd Jr. said “I got my tears out before the team came in. I didn’t want those guys to see me like that. Just got to stay positive. God gives the hardest battles to the strongest soldiers. It’s just another obstacle, and I’ll get through it.” It has been confirmed that he did tear his ACL and MCL and will be out for the season.
UDFA Rookie running back Trey Williams did a nice job planting, finding the hole, and getting a 1-yard touchdown. Ty Long also converted his 2nd extra point attempt.
Rookie 5th-round pick Martrell Spaight was around the ball a lot but missed a few tackles because his positioning was off. Although he did make some good plays on special teams, including stopping a kick return at the 14 yard line. Spright also was the captain of the 2nd and 3rd team defensives and looked comfortable calling the plays.
Preston Smith was a nice surprise as he was not looking like a 2nd-round pick in training camp so far. But Smith led the team with 6 tackles (2 for loss), 1 sack, and a hit on the quarterback. His sack came against Corner Shaw, he showed quickness, explosion, and used excellent hands versus the tackle. After the game he took us through the play, he said “I saw the tackle put his hands up [to get into Smith’s shoulder pads] and I timed it perfectly to swipe his hands down and I looked up and saw the quarterback.”
6th-round pick Safety Kyshoen Jarrett (who was playing in the slot as a cornerback) had a great pass breakup to prevent a 3rd down conversion. Jarrett made it looked like the receiver was open but closed on him right when the ball was thrown.
Rashad Ross showed he improved a lot from last season as his routes are more expanded and more crisp. He totaled 5 catches for 68 yards.
Another example of how well the rookies played: Former wide receiver Quinton Dunbar who switched to corner in wake of injuries had a great pass breakup on 3rd down covering a slant route. He also had tight coverage on a wide receiver who ran a deep route, but the pass was overthrown.
Akeem Davis had good awareness on a tipped pass by the receiver and picked it off and was the game ceiling play. Davis had surgery on his thumb last Tuesday and practiced the next day.
Rookie OLB Houston Bates put a nice move on the left tackle for a sack. Bates recorded back-to-back sacks.
Auden said he liked Matt Jones and Preston Smith’s play but said they both need to work on stamina, said they were both gassed having to play both special teams and offense/defense.
Robert Griffin III: 4-for-8 36 yards on 18 snaps

Preseason Week One Highlights vs Browns (Part One)
August 14, 2015
The winning team did not have the 'feeling' of a victory after a 20 to 17 win over the Cleveland Browns. The Redskins did not play music in the looker room like they normally would after a win as sadness filled the locker room when starting TE Niles Paul and backup RB Silas Redd Jr. suffered gruesome injures earlier in the night. The Redskins suffered a huge loss when Paul went down and will have a hard time filling his role.
During the first drive, Robert Griffin III threw a deep ball to a wide open Pierre Garçon, but Griffin waited a little long to let the ball go and threw to Garçon’s opposite shoulder. Pierre made a tough adjustment but could not come down with the ball as it went through his hands. Griffin said after the game “Pierre would have caught that nine times out of ten, so its good to get that out of his system before the season starts.”
Chris Thompson lined up at running back on the first third down. He picked up the blitz and made an excellent block to let RGIII get out an easy pass to get the first down.
After a questionable pass interference call on Chris Culliver—that lined the Browns up in the redzone that resulted in a touchdown three plays later—it looked like he got fired up and was around the ball a lot and was making very physical and impressive tackles against the run. Exactly what McCloughan wanted in the defense.
In the new defense, players are taught to read QBs eyes. If you watched closely Safety Duke Ihenacho was reading McCown’s eyes but Travis Benjamin slipped free (while Ihenacho was watching McCown) in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Ihenacho then left the game with a right arm contusion and was questionable to return.
Before Niles Paul went down and before he went down himself, Je’Ron Hamm was working as the 2nd tight end. Hamm later left the game and did not return after leaving with a left eye injury.
On third down and two, after not seeing anything open, RGIII ran up the middle and was tackled at the 1st down marker. Although wide receiver Ryan Grant was breaking free and could have gotten a few more yards.
On the next play, Griffin ran a bootleg to the left but had a hard time getting Grant the ball after having a limp in his run and having three defenders in his face. But Grant made a nice adjustment to make the catch and pick up 22 yards.
During an Alfred Morris run, someone fell on Niles Paul’s left leg and his ankle bent in the other direction. Paul had to have an air cast put on his left leg and was taken off by a cart. Jay Gruden said after the game that Paul is out for the season with a fractured and dislocated ankle. Paul was named the starting tight end this season after he worked very hard this offseason to improve multiple areas of his game, including adding around 27 lbs to improve his blocking. Paul said to his good friend Darrel Young while down on the field “DY this was supposed to be my year…”
Jay Gruden also said that TE Logan Pulsen might also be out for the season if he has to get surgery on his toe, but will be out for a long time either way. With these two injuries, it is a tough blow for the Redskins. Without having capable TEs who can block, the running game might be in trouble.
Brandon Scherff and Pierre Garçon had excellent blocks to open up holes for Alfred Morris that led to a huge gain.
Kai Forbath nailed a 33-yard field goal attempt after the offensive drive stalled. Then later drilled a 52 yarder, which would have been his longest made field goal if it was in a regular season game.
Trent Murphy was impressive when he got off the edge and batted down Johnny Manziel’s pass attempt. Murphy also had two QB pressures and a QB hit.
It looks like Jamison Crowder won the punt return job while not even playing. Andre Roberts was the first to go back to receive the punt but after gaining a few yards, fumble the ball, which later resulted in a Manziel touchdown run with the widest of lanes for him to run through. Chris Thompson also returned punts but did not look comfortable and natural. He muffed his first return attempt but picked it up right as defenders were closing in.

Pre-Game News and Notes vs Browns
August 13, 2015
- Head Coach Jay Gruden said RGIII will likely play a quarter, maybe more vs Cleveland. He wants to see the tempo and is not expecting perfection. The starting offense and defense usually only play a drive or two in the preseason opener so it will be a little different for the Redskins this year.
- Players not expected to play tonight vs Cleveland are DeSean Jackson (shoulder), Jeron Johnson (hamstring), Bashuad Breeland (knee), David Amerson (shoulder), Will Compton (groin), Trevardo Williams (hamstring), Junior Galette (pectoral), Jamison Crowder (hamstring), Logan Pulsen (toe), Jordan Reed (hamstring), Ryan Kerrigan (knee/cautious). Tight End Niles Paul (shoulder) was also a game time decision and will play tonight, but don’t expect a lot of snaps for him.
- Rookie OLB Preston Smith will start for Ryan Kerrigan while 2nd-year WR Ryan Grant starts for DeSean Jackson.
- Kick Returners warming up for Redskins are: Andre Roberts, Chris Thompson, Rashad Ross, Trey Williams, and Silas Redd Jr.
News And Notes From Joint Practice With the Houston Texans
August 13, 2015
- In the first drill while practicing with the Houston Texans, WR DeSean Jackson dove for a deep ball and came down hard on his right shoulder. He left with the trainers and did not return the the practice. According to NBC’s Dianna Russini later that day, Jackson separated his shoulder (Grade 2) and is expected to miss 2 weeks.
- A few plays later CB DeAngelo Hall slipped and fell on a comeback route by Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Hall later said he tweaked his groin and knee, but his Achilles was still intact and fine. He said his groin muscle was already feeling tight before practice, but he wanted to suit up because the Redskins' cornerback depth was already thin. He is expected to miss a week and should be back soon.
- Newest Redskins safety, Dashon Goldson—who was a Pro Bowler with the 49ers—is taking apart on the Redskins kickoff team. You need guys like that to buy in for improvement to happen in all three phases on the game.
- During the first practice with the Texans, place kickers Ty Long and Kia Forbath didn’t show anything more promising. Long went 3 for 5 with makes from 33, 36, and 43; and misses from 45 and 50 yards out. Forbath made 3 field goals with makes from 38, 40, and 45; and a miss from 50. Reporters later asked Forbath how he was going to recover from his poor showing so far and he responded saying he expected to get into a grove during the preseason. During the next practice Kia Forbath went 4 for 4 from 34, 36, 43, and 45 yards out. While Ty Long went 3 for 4 with makes from 38, 46, and 48; while missing from 40 yards out.
- NT Terrance ‘Pot Roast’ Knighton is playing Left Guard on field goal protect units. Going to be hard for someone to get passed him to block a field goal.
- Another special team’s note: The Redskins ran a fake field goal attempt resulting in a touchdown pass to RT Morgan Moses from K Kia Forbath.
- Redskins just can’t get a break in their secondary so far this training camp. Head Coach Jay Gruden said CB Chris Culliver also strained his hamstring, although he said it was not serious. But it resulted in having Deshazor Everett, Justin Rogers, and Tajh Hasson as the starting cornerbacks for a few practices.
- After waiving/injured 6th-round pick CB Tevin Mitchel last week, the Indianapolis Colts made a surprising move and claimed him off waivers. If Mitchel would have gone unclaimed he would have went back to the Redskins Injured Reserved List. The Redskins liked Mitchel but thought he was a project, if he would have stayed healthy he was likely going to be placed on the practice squad.
- During the last practice with the Houston Texans, during the first drill 4 brawls broke out between the two teams. The head coaches ultimately decided to seperate the two teams and practiced separately. After practice some Redskins players joked about the fights while being interviewed. Andre Roberts said “I stabbed a man in the heart!” Pierre Garçon responded with “I saw that! DY killed a guy. Did you throw a trident?” Also according to the Washington Post a Redskins spokesman asked ESPN (who were there covering the joint practice live) to turn off the camera’s but refused to listen.
- Rookie 5th-round pick, LB Martrell Spaight, got a chance to play with the first team defense, replacing Keenan Robinson, who was taking a break on the sideline.
- Redskins first round pick Brandon Scherff injured his right ankle when he accidentally stepped on Alfred Morris’ foot in 11-on-11’s. He later said he rolled his ankle and said he was fine. Scherff did some individual drills after practice.
- Niles Paul also hurt his left shoulder in practice. He headed off with a trainer for evaluation, but later said it was nothing serious. Safety Jeron Johnson has a strained hamstring and will be out a week. And OLB Trevardo Williams will be out two weeks with a hamstring injury.
- Gruden said RGIII is “seeing things more clear” and thought Griffin adjusted well facing a different defense [Texans].
- It looks as if the Scherff at Guard and Moses at Tackle is sticking. They have lined up that way every practice since making the switch. Brandon Scherff is a better fit inside, while Morgan Moses has shown a lot of improvement. Coaches seem to like the combination of Moses and Scherff more than that do with Spencer Long (at guard) and Scherff. The first unofficial depth chart came out with Scherff at guard and Moses at tackle, although coach Jay Gruden said nothing is etched in stone until week one.
- Junior Galette took the field in pads for the first time as a Redskin but worked in individual drills off to the side. He is still recovering from a pectoral injury, but is expected to “start opposite” of Kerrigan once he’s fully healthy.
- Tight End Logan Pulsen injured his toe and will have to visit a foot specialist to determine if he needs to have surgery. Either way Pulsen is expected to miss an extended period of time. The team has not talked about options outside of the building for Pulsen’s replacement. But Gruden said he’s interested in seeing Hamm and Dixon.
August 5th News and Notes From Training Camp
August 5th, 2015
- In awake of cornerback injuries at camp the Redskins announced the signings of 5th-year veteran Bryan McCann and rookie DreQuan Hoskey from Virginia. The Redskins did not waste time with McCann as he was swapping with Justin Rogers on second-team defense. Rookie Wide Receiver Quinton Dunbar is also working out with the DBs in individual drills.
- In a corresponding move they announced that they have waived S Phillip Thomas and waived/injured rookie CB Tevin Mitchel. Thomas was a 4th-round pick in the 2013 draft and had a promising career with the Redskins but it was derailed by a Lisfranc injury he suffered during his first preseason game. Tevin Mitchel suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder that will require surgery which will make him miss the entire season. If Mitchel goes unclamied off waivers, he reverts to the Redskins’ injured reserve list.
- Second year tackle Morgan Moses, who is recovering from a Lisfranc injury suffered late last season, practiced with the first team offense today at right tackle, meanwhile rookie Brandon Scherff worked at right guard. Spencer Long who was originally going to replace Chris Chester (who was released earlier this offseason) worked at right guard with the second team. According to multiple reports Moses has looked very good this offseason. So far they are just experimenting to see what works best. They have tried almost all the players at another position along the line, preparing for emergency situations. The Redskins say they want the beast five on the field; truly about competition. Offensive line coach Bill Callahan said “We’re sill sorting things out, nothing’s settled.”
- In special teams work both Forbath and Long converted 1-of-3 field goals. Long made a 42 yard field goal, but missed from 40 and 50 yards away. Forbath also converted a 42-yarder, but missed from 43 and 50 yards away. Rookie Ty Long worked with the first team today.
- Jay Gruden said that most of their passing plays are designed with Pierre Garçon as the primary target in attempt to get him the ball more, but coverage dictates whether they give him the ball or not.
- Junior Galette will likely start taking part in walk-throughs now, but Gruden not planning to practice him vs Texans.
- Gruden also said Chris Thomson is “really starting to emerge as the third-down back.” He was the primary back with the first-team’s four minute drill today.
- Terrance Knighton had the flu today and was held out of practice. Jeron Johnson also injured his hamstring yesterday and was held out of practice again. This has to be a concern as this is the second time he’s injured it during camp.
- Gruden also said it’s not a guarantee that the Redskins would keep all three QBs. During his three years in Cincinnati they only kept 2 quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.
- Akeem Davis fractured his left thumb yesterday, but practiced today with a cast on it. He said “I ain’t missing no reps!” According to Mike Jones from the Washington Post.
News & Notes from Training Camp
August 4th, 2015
- According to the NFL’s daily transaction report, the Redskins have placed LB Ja’Gared Davis on non-football injury list.
- After trying to cut back, 2nd-year CB Bashaud Breeland twisted his right knee and fell to the ground; multiple players, coaches, and trainers rushed over to tend to him. He had to be helped off the field by a cart while not putting any pressure on his knee. Gruden later confirmed that Breeland sprained his MCL and will be out for 4 to 6 weeks. And According to ESPN’s John Keim, Breeland can serve the suspension while hurt, which would mean that he could possibly be back on the field for week 2.
- Jay Gruden said Justin Rogers, Tevin Mitchel, and Kyshoen Jarrett will get the early reps covering the slot in Breeland’s absence.
- The Redskins announced that they have signed CB Deshazor Everett and released LB Dasman McCullum.
- Gruden said he’s been happy with right guard Spencer Long and Brandon Scherff’s work at both RT and RG in training camp, but says he still has a long way to go and has a lot to learn.
- Gruden reiterated that Junior Galette still needs a couple of days to get ready before joining the team for practice. He is recovering from a pectoral injury he suffered earlier in the summer while lifting weights.
- DeSean Jackson whacked his left hand in practice and winced in pain after a long pass play that was broken up. He went over to the side and had the trainers look at it for a few minutes before getting back on the field. Jackson later stated that he dislocated a finger on his left hand and just popped it back in.
- DeAngelo Hall will take a day off every now and then just so he can be extra cautions and not rush back.
- Tackle Willie Smith injured his Achilles and will be day-to-day according to multiple reports.
- Rookie CB Tevin Mitchel also injured his right shoulder and will have to have surgery after tearing his labrum. Gruden said it will 'most likely’ be an season ending procedure for the sixth round pick.
- Rookie tackle Brandon Scherff and the newly re-signed outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan face off a lot of the time during practice. In one-on-one drills Kerrigan consistently beats the rookie with quick outside moves. But during full team work Scherff has done a nice job vs Kerrigan in the run game preventing him from setting the edge.
- Morgan Moses has also looked a lot more improved, he continues to play with a lower base and is creating holes in the run game.
- Third Round Pick Matt Jones is day-to-day with a sore knee after walking off with athletic trainers at the end of practice. Nobody has taken more hits than Jones so far during camp, as he seems to be a target after delivering blows to the defense himself.
- In full-team work Stephen Paea used his quickness and strength to get in the backfield a couple of times to make a few plays. Coaches consider him one of the strongest players on the team.
- Terrance ‘Pot Roast’ Knighton has also shown a lot of quickness at the line which is a reason the Redskins are comfortable playing him in nickel situations.
- Jay Gruden said Robert Griffin III is 'on a steady climb’ and has done well in practices so far. He has looked better than this time last year and a lot of reporters have said he’s looked really good. NFL Network’s Michael Robinson said “RGIII looks really, really good” on day one of camp. He went 4 of 8 the first day in 11-on11’s, however a day later he went without throwing an incompletion. He is still progressing to where they need him to be though.
- David Amerson and Akeem Davis suffered injuries in practice on Monday. Amerson injured his left shoulder and had it wrapped up after displaying good coverage on DeSean Jackson. Davis also injured his left thumb during practice.
- Justin Rogers has done a pretty good job in slot so far replacing Breeland. He prevented a possible touchdown to WR Pierre Garçon, but Garçon later beat him with a shutter-step in one-on-one drills.
- Safety Duke Ihenacho has been making a lot of plays during practices so far. He did a nice job in run support, preventing Chris Thompson from getting to the outside. He also made a nice play vs tight end Jordan Reed defending a fade route in the end zone by knocking the ball away.
- In the second units two-minute drill, Kicker Kia Forth missed a 54-yarder wide left, but Gruden called the defense for having 12 men on the field, but Forbath then missed a 49-yard attempt wide left.
Predicting Redskins 53-Man Roster And Depth Chart
OFFENSE
July 22nd, 2015
Quarterbacks:
Candidates: Robert Griffin III, Colt McCoy, Kirk Cousins
Verdict:
Robert Griffin III
Kirk Cousins
Colt McCoy
Jay Gruden declared back at the combine that RGIII would be the starter going into the season, but after Griffin things could get interesting. I believe the Redskins could pull Griffin if he doesn’t show improvement by at least the bye week. So that would mean having 2 QBs to start and back up the other so there isn’t a risk of Griffin being injured and having to possibly pay him the 16 million for the 2016 season (in the scenario that he doesn’t show improvement). As of now McCoy and Cousins are battling it out for the backup job, with McCoy taking the first 2nd team reps at OTA’s. This could be a close battle during camp and will be something to watch. It will be Colt McCoy’s first time being in the same offense in his time in the NFL, while Cousins worked with Jon Gruden (older brother of head coach Jay Gruden) in the offseason this year trying to get an edge over the other QBs.

Running Backs:
Candidates: Alfred Morris, Matt Jones, Silas Redd Jr., Chris Thompson, Trey Williams, Michael Hill
Verdict:
Alfred Morris
Matt Jones
Chris Thompson
Alfred Morris should be the clear cut starter, but Rookie Matt Jones says he will compete for the starting job with Morris. While the coaches say Jones won’t take the starting role from Morris he will take a few carries away from him so they will both be fresh later in the game. Another good camp battle to watch will be for the last RB spot. Redd, Thompson, and Williams look to duke it out and show why they belong on the roster. Redd is an all-round player and does everything you need to do as a RB well. While Thompson and Williams are more of the speed/quickness players. They would be a great complement to the battling rams in Morris and Jones and would be a great weapon in the passing game. But Thompson has been injury prone in his time in Washington, so that could potentially give the rookie out of Texas A&M Trey Williams the edge. But I have Thompson taking the last spot because he was given the 'first crack' to win the 3rd-down roll. He is also improving in his pass-blocking ability which is a vital roll to 3rd down success.

Fullbacks:
Candidates: Darrel Young and Jordan Campbell
Verdict:
Darrel Young
Darrel Young should see an increase in playing time this season due to the Redskins switching to a power scheme. He is one of the undervalued players in the NFL because he can contribute in many ways. (In the passing game, blocking, running, special teams, etc.)

Tight Ends:
Candidates: Jordan Reed, Niles Paul, Logan Paulsen, Chase Dixon, Je’Ron Hamm, Devin Mahina
Verdict:
Jordan Reed
Niles Paul
Logan Paulsen
Niles Paul could be the starting tight end come week one if Reed is still recovering from his knee injury. If Jordan Reed could escape all of his injury problems he could be one of the best TEs in the league, but until then this position group for the Redskins will be thin. Niles Paul showed good improvement and was a factor in the passing game. He also added 14 pounds this off-season in hopes to improve his blocking. Logan Paulsen also added some weight this off-season and has worked most on his blocking, hoping to be the Redskins “blocking” tight end.

Wide Receivers:
Candidates: DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garçon, Andre Roberts, Jamison Crowder, Reggie Bell, Quinton Dunbar, Ryan Grant, Tony Jones, Colin Lockett, Rashad Ross, Evan Spencer
Verdict:
WR1: DeSean Jackson
WR2: Pierre Garçon
WR3: Andre Roberts
Jamison Crowder
Ryan Grant
Evan Spencer
This is probably the most talented and crowded position group on the roster for the Redskins. DJax and Garçon are easly the first two on the roster from this group. And this is where it starts getting interesting, rookie Jamison Crowder has looked so far in practice and is expected to challenge Roberts for the slot position. Roberts came in last season with a lot of hype but never produced as much as many people thought. He only had 36 receptions this season which is the second fewest he’s had in his career (25 receptions in rookie season). Ryan Grant was praised during OTA’s and Training Camp for looking like a 10-year veteran, but only hauled in 7 passes last season; he is also looking to compete for the slot role. Sixth round pick, Evan Spencer, is the Redskins tallest receiver standing at six feet two inches tall. He has also looked good so far in camp, but will mostly be a blocker on offense and should also be a factor on special teams, which is something the Redskins are lacking from their receivers. Rashad Ross could look to push for a roster spot as he had some impressive plays in camp last season and almost made the roster.

Rashad Ross could look to push for a roster spot as he had some impressive plays in camp last season and almost made the roster.
Offensive Linemen:
Candidates: Trent Williams, Brandon Scherff, Kory Lichtensteiger, Takoby Cofield, Tom Compton, Arie Kouandjio, Tyler Larsen, Shawn Lauvao, Josh LeRibeus, Spencer Long, Morgan Moses, Ty Nsekhe, Austin Reiter, Willie Smith
Verdict:
LT: Trent Williams Morgan Moses
LG: Shawn Lauvao Tom Compton
C: Kory Lichtensteiger Arie Kouandjio
RG: Spencer Long Willie Smith
RT: Brandon Scherff
I think it’s safe to say Williams and Scherff are a lock to make the roster. Lichtensteiger, Lauvao, and Long should also make the roster as they are all expected to start. After signing a one-year extension this offseason, Tom Compton has been working with the starters at LT in OTA’s so far with Trent Williams recovering from a lingering in ankle injury. Morgan Moses is still recovering from the lisfranc injury he suffered last season, but looks to return during training camp. He is looking to compete with Scherff at RT, but will most likely be backing up Trent Williams at LT during the season. Fourth round pick, Arie Kouandjio, has looked impressive in rookie camp and OTA’s showing a lot of power and good first punch. He could be a surprise starter week one or could possibly take over in the middle of the season if Lauvao and Long aren’t preforming well. The last roster spot of the offensive linemen could also be another spot to watch for tough competition. In this situation I have Willie Smith barely slipping on to the roster over LeRibeus. While Williams and Moses are still recovering from there injuries last season -- Smith would be a good backup option with experience which is something the position is lacking. LeRibeus could be a sleeper though because he is a better fit for the power scheme than the zone scheme former head coach Mike Shannahan implanted when he was drafted back in the 2012 draft. He is also practicing at center (which is the position his college coach thought would be his best position in the NFL) to possibly be the emergency center after the Redskins released Chris Chester who played that role the past few seasons (Spencer Long is also practicing there too). Seventh round pick, Austin Reiter could also challenge for the last roster spot, but I ultimately think the Redskins will place him on the practice squad so he can have time to get bigger and so they can develop him to possibly be the starting center in the future.

DEFENSE
Defensive Linemen:
Candidates: Jason Hatcher, Ricky Jean-Francois, Chris Baker, Stephen Paea, Frank Kearse, Terrance Knighton, Kedric Golston, Robert Thomas, Corey Crawford, LaKendrick Ross, Travian Robertson, Jarrell Powe
Verdict:
DE: Jason Hatcher Chris Baker
NT: Terrance Knighton Frank Kearse
DE: Stephen Paea Kedric Golston
Ricky Jean-Francois
Jason Hatcher is looking to bounce back after a down season filled with injuries. He has already spoken about how excited he is for the defense that new defensive coordinator Joe Barry is bringing to D.C. Hatcher and new free-agent signee Stephen Paea are planned to be “unleashed” in the new system and should rush the quarterback more frequently. The Redskins got a steal when they signed Terrance Knighton to a one year “prove it” deal. He is one of the best run stuffers in the NFL and will help plug the holes up the middle with his huge frame against the run. Ricky Jean-Francois is another Scot McCloughan draftee, and while he hasn’t been very consistent throughout his career, he is a great addition to their once injury filled and a weaker spot on their roster. From all the defensive linemen on last years roster, only Jason Hatcher ranked ahead of Ricky Jean-Francois on Pro Football Focus’ ranking of every defensive lineman from 2014. Jean-Francois should also come in on a lot of packages on defense and line up in many different positions in effort to get to the passer. Last season Chris Baker started a career high 12 games, but also appeared in 3 more games. He also looks to get some playing time this season to a—hopefully—much stronger and effective defensive line rushing the quarterback. Either way Baker will be great depth to a defensive line that desperately need that last season. Frank Kearse flashed some good things last season and looks to do the same this season. He is also a younger player worth developing. Kedric Golston also made some plays last season and hopes to do even more this year. The veteran makes it on to the roster in this case because of his experience and readiness to come in a any moment. Newly signed NT Jerrell Powe, however, would be good insurance in case Terrance Knighton went down. He has played in 28 games with the Chiefs and Texans; he could also be in-line to make a leap for a final spot on the roster.

Inside Linebackers:
Candidates: Adam Hayward, Will Compton, Perry Riley, Keenan Robinson, Martrell Spaight, Ja’Gared Davis, Terrance Plummer
Verdict:
LILB: Keenan Robinson
RILB: Perry Riley
Will Compton
Adam Hayward
Martrell Spaight
Keenan Robinson looked great last year and could become one of the best linebackers in the NFL, he just has to do one thing—stay healthy. The right inside linebacker position could be another surprise camp battle. Perry Riley and Will Compton should compete in training camp for the starting position. The edge is learning toward Riley as of now, but don’t count of Compton who was pushing for snaps last season. New defensive coordinator, Joe Barry, also worked with more “hybrid” type linebackers in San Diego, which would point toward using Compton more if Barry decides to bring that to D.C. Adam Hayward will be welcomed back this year after being placed on IR last season. Losing him was a big blow to their depth in their defense and on special teams, where he was elected captain. He was also one of the teams veteran leaders and one of the more vocal guys on the team; as I remember him being one of the loudest players on the field during training camp in 2014. Fifth round pick Martrell Spaight is a very physical player who should get on the roster pretty easily if he shows progress and special teams ability. He is someone worth coaching up and potentially becoming a starter in a year or two. Someone to watch for his undrafted free agent Terrance Plummer, it wouldn’t surprise me if he made it on the roster due to his size and punishing playing style. If he can provide special teams help he has a better chance at making the roster. He is someone I would hold around for a few years and try to develop too.

Outside Linebackers:
Candidates: Ryan Kerrigan, Trent Murphy, Preston Smith, Jackson Jeffcoat, Dyshawn Davis, Trevardo Williams, Houston Bates, Dasman McCullum
Verdict:
LOLB: Ryan Kerrigan
ROLB: Trent Murphy
Preston Smith
Jackson Jeffcoat
Ryan Kerrigan, Trent Murphy, and Preston Smith a pretty much a lock to make the roster unless something drastic happens. But the fight for the starting job should be an interesting battle to watch. Trent Murphy has gotten bigger and has worked on being more explosive off the ball this off-season in effort to take down the passer more frequently. After only racking up 2.5 sacks last season, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden, expects Murphy to make the biggest jump from year one to two. He established himself as an excellent run defender during his rookie season, but needs to form more pass rushing skills in order to stay on the field more often. Preston Smith is a versatile player who can line up anywhere on the line and will be used in many ways. Smith is competing with Murphy at ROLB and has looked impressive so far. He is playing the run well while also showing some good pass rushing skills. Many have stated how long his arms look saying “his arms look like they are hanging down to his knees” and he has been using them wisely batting down passes during rookie mini-camp and OTA’s. And even though they are battling it out, the Redskins are expected to use Murphy, Smith, and Kerrigan in a lot of nickel packages that they will use close to 70% of the time. The last spot for outside linebacker will be a tough one for the coaches to choose. I went with Jackson Jeffcoat making it on to the roster over Williams because of the potential he brings as a pass rusher. He appeared for the Redskins in a few games at the end of last season and made every minute of it, recording a sack, an interception, and a pass deflected. Although they may decide to keep five OLBs because of the in-experience at this position which is something journey man, Trevardo Williams, would offer. Williams has been working with the first team defense in place of Kerrigan (recovering from a knee procedure) and has impressed so far. But they also have some more competition for a roster spot with rookie Dyshawn Davis in the picture. Davis has impressed during rookie mini-camp and OTA’s so far, but will most likely be a practice squad candidate.

Cornerback:
Candidates: David Amerson, DeAngelo Hall, Bashaud Breeland, Chris Culliver, Justin Rogers, Tajh Hasson, Tevin Mitchel, Trey Wolfe
Verdict:
CB1: Chris Culliver
CB2: DeAngelo Hall
SLOT: Bashaud Breeland
David Amerson
Tevin Mitchel
The Redskins gave their biggest contract this offseason season to Chris Culliver when he signed a four-year deal. Jay Gruden even said they saw him as the best cornerback in free agency behind Darrelle Revis. Even though DeAngelo Hall is coming off two Achilles surgery’s he is in great shape and should be fully participating when training camp gets underway. He practiced opposite of Culliver with first team for a few reps during OTA practices also. Bashuad Breeland has also looked good in practices so far. He’s played in the slot and on the outside, but when Hall returns (and if he plays at a high level) Breeland will mostly play slot corner when all 3 of them are on the field. Although Hall did mainly play the slot position in 2012, so they could decided to put him back their, but as of now that seems unlikely. Former second round pick, David Amerson, took a big step backwards in his development last season as he was rated the worst corner in Pro Football in 2014. He has looked better in OTA’s so far though, he has missed on some plays, but it’s still the beginning of June, and has time to learn from them as he looks to bounce back this season. There hasn’t been much talk about rookie Tevin Mitchel, but I believe he makes the final roster after the Redskins cut Tracy Porter. He can contribute to special teams right away as he also continues to develop. Someone who could push him for the final spot though is Trey Wolfe, he has made some impressive plays in practice and has a nose for the ball. Look out for him in training camp and preseason as the offseason starts to wrap up.

Safety:
Candidates: Dashon Goldson, Jeron Johnson, Phillip Thomas, Trenton Robinson, Duke Ihenacho, Kyshoen Jarrett, Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith, Akeem Davis
Verdict:
FS: Dashon Goldson
SS: Duke Ihenacho
Jeron Johnson
Kyshoen Jarrett
After being traded to the Redskins from the Bucs, Dashon Goldson will be starting at free safety this season. He made the Pro Bowl in 2011 and 2012 with the 49ers, but after receiving a huge contract with the Bucs he became a big disappointment. Pro Football Focus graded him as one of the worst safeties in the league with his time with the Bucs. But he says it was due to their scheme and that he did not fit as well as he thought he would have in their system. He looks to turn his career around in Washington in 2015. The battle for the strong safety spot, however, is not as clear. Duke Ihenacho and Jeron Johnson will compete for the rights to the starting job in training camp this year. When Duke Ihenacho signed with the Redskins after being released by the Broncos, it wouldn’t have surprised me if he would have taken over one of the starting safety positions once he got comfortable with the play book. But unfortunately, his season was cut short to three games due to a fractured heel. During practices so far this offseason, Ihenacho has looked really good against the run, coming for the snap very quickly. Ever since the Redskins inked Jeron Johnson to a two-year deal, everyone thought that the Redskins would make him the immediate starter. But it surprised everyone when the Redskins had Ihenacho starting over Johnson during OTA’s. That could be because he has only started in one game in the NFL after learning and sitting behind Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor though. Johnson has looked good in practice also, he has been breaking up passes and making a few interceptions. Come week one either one could take the job, but I went with Ihenacho because of his game experience. It would not surprise me if they rotated the safeties for a little bit, but I expect Jeron Johnson to be starting after the first few games into the season (not because Ihenacho is struggling or anything, mainly because of Johnson’s progress). After them it should be a three-way battle between Robinson, Davis, and Jarrett for the last roster spot. The spot should go to who id the most versatile. All three are very good special teamers, Robinson has the most game experience, while Davis and Jarrett are young and have potential. Jarrett might be the most flexible though, as he has lined up as a strong and free safety (mainly free), is a good special teamer, and also returned punts in college; so he could be the emergency punt returner if they ever needed one. It’s too early to predict who makes the 53-man roster at this point and even thought about leaving a “Fill in the blank: _____” in the verdict, but felt it was incomplete. So I decided on Jarrett since he’d be the free safety backup and because he can play multiple spots. Although, if the Redskins decided to go a different route, they could still place Jarrett on the practice squad to develop him. They could also decided to have five safeties and keep fewer players at another position.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Kicker:
Candidates: Ty Long and Kai Forbath
Verdict:
Kai Forbath
Not much will change on special teams in D.C. Forbath still needs to improve on his kickoffs, but is still very accurate in field goal attempts. Ty Long will compete against Forbath, but it is Forbath’s to lose.
Long Snapper and Punter:
Candidates: Nick Sundberg and Tress Way
Verdict:
LS: Nick Sundberg
P: Tress Way
Not much to say here, there is no competition for either player. Tress Way was one of the top punters last season, so there is really no need for competition like they have had in past seasons.

Kick Returner:
Candidates: Bashaud Breeland, Jamison Crowder, DeSean Jackson, Kyshoen Jarrett, Andre Roberts, Rashad Ross, Chris Thompson, Trey Williams
Verdict: Jamison Crowder
Bashaud Breeland has been taking some reps at returner surprisingly, he said he is ‘in the mix’ for the job, but I doubt they decide to risk putting him their and possibly getting injured. I don’t believe DeSean Jackson and Kyshoen Jarrett are actually being considered for the job, I think they will be emergency returns if they ever need it. Although, Jackson is the player they would put in if the ‘Skins are desperately in need of a big play. Rashad Ross, Chris Thompson, and Trey Williams are also intriguing players at this position, and if they make the roster could be ligament options. But the competition really comes down to two players: Jamison Crowder and Andre Roberts. Its kind of funny also because they are both competing for the slot position. Roberts was expected to turn one of the worst units in the league around last season, but never got it going. I went with rookie Jamison Crowder because he was an electric returner in college and has the speed and quickness to make big plays.

Rookie Mini-camp News And Notes
The Redskins held rookie minicamp Friday May 8th with all 10 draft picks, undrafted signees, and rookie tryouts. And as you would expect all eyes were on 1st round pick Brandon Scherff. He dominated most of the day as he would line up against undrafted free-agents and 2nd round pick Preston Smith. Scherff did well against Smith most of the day, but Smith did get the best of him a few times. Gruden praised how hard Scherff plays and works, but says transition from left to right isn’t easy. Brandon Scherff said that he’s only been focusing on right tackle the last week, but it said “it would be nice to learn every position” on the line. Preston Smith lined up at ROLB most of the time, but moved all over. Gruden said he loves Preston Smith’s length especially in run defense. Third round pick RB Matt Jones ran well in space and for a big guy showed good agility. He showed good route running, shaking linebackers frequently, and displayed good hands. He had back to back catches at one point, one was high and difficult and did a good job adjusting and making the play. If he keeps showing that he can catch and make plays, he should see a lot more playing time as a rookie. Matt Jones on Alfred Morris: “I know he’s going to be the starter, but we will compete. I will compete with anybody who’s in front of me.” Gruden praised Jamison Crowder’s football IQ and says that it’s a key asset for a slot receiver. Jay Gruden also said Crowder is “effortlessly” applying classroom lessons to field. Arie Kouandjio showed a lot of power and an excellent first punch; Gruden said he really like’s Kouandjio’s passion for the game and wants every bit of knowledge shared with him. Sixth round pick S Kyshoen Jarrett worked at free safety during rookie minicamp and seems to have a nose for the ball. He got beat in coverage a few times, but did a good job reacting in time to break up the pass or make a sure stop. Wide receiver Evan Spencer sat out after tweaking his hamstring. Jay Gruden said overall a lot of rookies made good impressions and ended up signing four tryout players (QB Hutson Mason, LB Houston Bates, OT Tovar Allen, LB Dasman McCullum).
Redskins Trade With Seahawks/Select RB Matt Jones In 3rd Round
On day two of the NFL Draft, Scot McCloughan got what he wanted, he made a trade with the Seattle Seahawks in the 3rd round which sent 3 more picks to the Redskins to have a total of 10 picks. With the 95th pick the Redskins took Florida RB Matt Jones off the board which was surprising to most. On most pre-draft boards many teams and NFL Draft writers had Jones going in the 5th or 6th round. One scout (with another team) said that they had Jones graded in the late rounds, but said he wouldn’t bet against Scot. He also said a lot of times juniors get under graded, so they sometimes appear like reaches based on pre-draft grades. Others around the NFL said that they also had him graded a little lower, but that it was a good pick for the Redskins because Jones fits exactly what they want to do. According to Ian Rapoport one team even viewed him as the draft’s top back. Matt Jones is 6’2” 231 (and it should be noted that he is bigger than all the receivers on the roster). Jones says he models his game after Marshawn Lynch, which is something McCloughan and Gruden like to hear as they also compare him to Lynch. He is a strong, powerful, and aggressive runner and is a great fit for the power scheme that the Redskins are switching to. Many considered him the best pass-protecting running back in the draft. He doesn’t have the top-end speed, but he has a solid initial burst and has the size to run through tackles. And while his stats weren’t outstanding in college he says it was mainly due to the type of offense they ran and that it didn’t fit the type of style he likes to run. Jones has had some durability issues in college, he has had surgery to repair his meniscus in his left knee twice. Although they spent a fairly high pick on Jones, Gruden said Alfred Morris won’t be affected by Jones, but that he will help complement Morris and will help keep both of them fresh in the 4th quarter. By taking Jones in the 3rd round (and the best run-blocking offensive lineman in Brandon Scherff with the 5th overall pick) it shows they want to rely on the run more often this season.
Redskins Take Preston Smith With 38th Overall Pick
With the 38th overall pick in the 2nd round the Redskins selected Preston Smith, OLB/DL, Mississippi State. Many other scouts around the league thought he was a first round talent and were surprised he lasted until the 2nd round. Some compare him to Justin Tuck and Antonio Smith, including himself, saying he tries to study and “steal” moves from players like Miller, Watt, and Tuck. NBC Sports NFL Draft writer was one of those who compared him to Tuck and also had Smith as his 13th overall player. In college his coaches moved him all over the field; he rushed from the edge, up the middle, from 3 and 2pt stances, and dropped into coverage. Smith has good hands and punch but some worry about his speed and weight, but that’s exactly what McCloughan wants. Preston Smith is 6’5” 265lbs compared to Orakpo who is 6’3” 257lbs. He was at 271lbs but said that he lost some weight leading up to the draft because of nervousness and says he’d like to lose a little more. Responding about his speed Smith said he looked slower on film because the college scheme he played in was more read and react scheme but felt like he was faster on third downs. Gruden said that Preston Smith will have to compete with Trent Murphy for playing time, but that in some packages they could play together. Smith was one of my favorite picks in the draft and I’m looking forward to seeing him what he can do in his career with the Redskins.
Redskins Select Brandon Scherff 5th Overall
May, 1, 2015
When the Redskins were on the clock with the 5th overall pick, it was the first time they owned a first round selection since 2012 when they took Quarterback Robert Griffin III second overall. By the time the Redskins were picking they had the best defensive lineman in the draft Leonard Williams on the board and the best offensive lineman in Brandon Scherff. The Redskins ended up choosing Scherff over Williams, which was a surprise to most. Reports came out that Williams slipped some because of a minor shoulder injury. Gruden said there was discussions about taking Leonard Williams and others, but they saw Scherff as best player available. Some believe this was a reach for the Redskins, as one scout said he felt Scherff went a little early, but considered it a solid pick. But since the Redskins turned in their pick with a decent amount of time on the clock, it is clear that the Redskins rated him higher than others. According to Albert Breer the Redskins had Scherff in their top 3 players on their board. But this pick shows how much (or how much they’d like to) the Redskins will be relying on the run next season. Brandon Scherff is an outstanding run blocker, but needs work on pass protection. He is pretty good in pass protection but does need to improve, one Redskins official even admitted that he needed help in that area. During Gruden’s press conference he said that Scherff will start out at right tackle day one. Gruden said he was the best player available for what they wanted to do when they picked. He also said that Scherff has a real passion for playing football and has a lot of fun. But with Gruden saying they will try him at right tackle is a little head scratching, a lot of people project him to be better at guard with his dominating run blocking style and toughness. A coach from another team said his take on Scherff was: Good Right Tackle, Pro Bowl Guard. But his versatility is something the Redskins will welcome. Brandon Scherff said when he got the call Jay Gruden was on the phone and said “We want you to be a Redskin, what do you think of that?” he also said he was surprised that the Redskins picked him because he hasn’t talked ti them since the combine. Scherff will bring a new mean, nasty, toughness blocking style to the ‘Skins that has been missing for a long time and is something that the organization really wanted.

Scot McCloughan Pre-Draft Press Confrence
In General Manager Scot McCloughan’s press conference today
he said the Redskins will pick up Robert Griffin III’s 5th year
option that will pay him $16.1 million in 2016. He said that they had made the
decision a while back but decided to wait to announce it until today and that
they view it as a franchise tag. According to ESPN980 Radio Show Host Chris
Russell, here’s the deal on the injury risk for Griffin and Redskins liability:
As long as Griffin passes physical before start of 2016 league year, the
Redskins would be in the clear. However, if an injury scenario exists and the
Redskins pass the physical it could be grievance. If grievance is filed, 40% of
the 2016 cap figure of $16.1 million would be held against the Redskins cap
while the case plays out. McCloughan says that there are no offers for Kirk
Cousins yet, but he’d listen if there were any offers. But he said he’d like to
keep Cousins because he’s a good, young QB. He also said that if a good
quarterback falls to them, they would still consider taking him. McCloughan also
said that the draft board is just about set and that they will have it done by Thursday
so there is no confusion on draft day. The team currently has 7 picks now but
would like to end up having 10 at the end of the draft. And said “we’re not
going to draft for needs… Just getting good football players.” And for you
offensive line fans out there he said he’s looking for size and strength particularly
at offensive line and will address that position in the draft. Says the team
will change running game so “if you play the Washington Redskins, you feel it.”
Redskins Open To Trading 5th Overall Pick
April 5, 2015
NFL Trade Value Chart From: http://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart.asp\
Some new reports have said that the Redskins would be open to trading the number five overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. It’s not really surprising that they are shopping it, but it would also be a smart move. Say Dante Fowler Jr. and Leonard Williams are picked before the Redskins select at #5, the best pass rushers left are Vic Beasley who struggles against the run (but can bet taught), Shane Ray who some General Managers believe he won’t be able to transition to OLB in the NFL, and Randy Gregory who was using marijuana before the combine when he knew he would have to take drug tests and he also has some weight issues. So the Redskins might not be in love with someone time they select (at least I wouldn’t be if I were them), and that means trade back, even if you don’t get a huge trade offer. So here we will take a look at possible trade partners with the Redskins.
Chicago Bears, Pick 7th Overall
No one has really talked about the Bears trading up, and you might ask why they would trade up to spots also. Well, here’s why I think they are a dark horse candidate to trade up. The Jets are sitting in front of the Bears at 6th and many think the Jets will either go QB, OLB, or WR; which are all positions the Bears could be targeting. If Chicago’s front office doesn’t believe in Jay Cutler anymore they could make a move to get Heisman winner Marcus Mariota before the Jets at number 6th. They could also want to leap in front of the Jets if they were targeting a pass rusher that the Jets might be targeting also. The Bears also traded their number one receiver in Brandon Marshall to the Jets in March, so the Bears could be looking for a young receiver to pair up with Jeffery in 2015. If the Bears did trade up with Washington, a fair trade would be for the Redskins to give their #5 overall pick, and for the Bears to give the Redskins the 7th overall pick and their 71st overall pick (3rd round draft pick.) At pick number 7, the Redskins would still be looking at the same players as they did at number 5.
St. Louis Rams, Pick 10th Overall
Many believe that the Rams might trade up for Marcus Mariota even though they just received Nick Foles, but I don’t believe that is the case. Jeff Fisher said that they were offered a 1st round pick for Bradford (Cleveland), but they turned it down because they would rather have an experienced QB. So if the Rams did trade up I think it would be for a WR. In either White or Cooper, whichever Oakland doesn’t select. So if the Rams wanted to make a move with the ‘Skins they would have to give up the 10th overall pick, 41st overall pick (2nd round), and if the Redskins really wanted to push them, the 227th overall pick (7th round.) If the ‘Skins did make this move and they held the 10th overall pick they could be looking at OL, S, CB, DT, and OLB. At number 10, G/RT Brandon Scherff would be a great selection, while S Landon Collins would still be a reach but a little more reasonable. The Redskins could also be looking at a lockdown corner in Trae Waynes or Marcus Peters, Malcom Brown or Danny Shelton at DT/NT, or an OLB in Bud Dupree, Randy Gregory, or Shane Ray.
Cleveland Browns, Pick 12th and 19th Overall
Some reposts have stated that the Browns love QB Marcus Mariota and rate him as the number one QB in this draft, so could that mean they would want to move up for Mariota? Cleveland’s new QB coach was Mariota’s private coach earlier this offseason and could encourage the Browns to move up to get him. But Mariota isn’t the only player the Browns could want to trade up for, they badly need another receiver after they lost TE Jordan Cameron in free agency and Josh Gordan to suspension. Both Kevin White and Amari Cooper would be big playmakers in their first year and beyond and would improve the Browns offense immediately. If Cleveland wanted to move up they have a few options, if there is a bidding war for the #5 pick or if the Redskins wanted to push it, Cleveland could offer the #12 and #19 picks to be able to move up. Another option would be trading the #12 overall pick 43rd pick (2nd round), and the 189th overall pick (6th round). At pick number 12 the players/positions they would target would be about the same as 10th overall, but if the Redskins also go the 19th overall pick it would still be about the same players as 10th and 12th but they could also add OT/OG La’el Collins, DT Arik Armstead, CB Jalen Collins, OT D.J. Humphries, OT Ereck Flowers, OLB Eli Harold, OT Andrus Peat, WR Dorial Green-Beckham, and CB Kevin Johnson.
San Francisco 49ers, Pick 15th Overall
Out of all the teams I have on this list I believe the 49ers are the most likely to trade up in the draft, maybe not with the Redskins, but there’s a pretty good chance. Reports have said that the 49ers are ‘in love’ with WR Amari Cooper and would consider trading up for him. If the Raiders select Kevin White or someone other than Cooper, things could get pretty interesting. Scot McCloughan still has connections with the 49ers and could be one of the first places he would call if they try and shop the pick. To trade up the 49ers would have to either give up their 1st round picks this year and next year, or they could choose to trade the 15th overall pick, the 46th pick (2nd round), and the 79th overall pick (3rd round). If ‘Skins were to trade down to #15 their targets would be the same as #10 and 12 picks.
Philadelphia Eagles, Pick 20th Overall
The Eagles have been rumored about moving up more than anyone this year. If they did decide to move up to the 5th overall pick it’d most likely be to pick QB Marcus Mariota. But it wouldn’t be surprising if they moved up to get Cooper or White either, so they could replace Jeremy Maclin. If the Eagles wanted to move up 15 spots they would have to give up the 20th overall pick this year, the 52nd pick this year (2nd round), their 1st round pick next year, and a late round pick this year or next year according to the trade value chart. If the ‘Skins did own the 20th overall pick the could legitimately draft S Landon Collins without it being a reach, and they could draft the O-Lineman, D-Lineman, CBs, WRs, and OLBs that I mentioned before.

Redskins Acquire FS Dashon Goldson in Trade With Buccaneers
April 4, 2015
Early Friday morning the Redskins finalized a trade with the Buccaneers that has been in the works since early March. The Redskins received FS Dashon Goldson and a 2016 7th round pick while giving away a 2016 6th round pick. Tampa Bay will still pay $3.5 million of Goldson salary in 2015, while Washington will only have to pay $4 million. So if Goldson does not work out, the Redskins could cut him and only lose $4 million this year, and a 6th round pick in 2016. And although they would lose a draft pick, they also gained a 7th round pick. So Goldson is not a big risk at all. He played college football at the University of Washington, where he played 43 games, totaled 293 tackles, 6 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 sack. At the time Redskins GM Scot McCloughan was the General Manager for the 49ers when they selected Goldson in the 4th round of the 2007 draft. With the 49ers he played 81 games, 346 total tackles, 3 sacks, 34 passes defended, 14 interceptions, and made the Pro-Bowl twice. After the 2012 season Goldson signed a five year, $41.25 million contract, including $22 million guaranteed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But unfortunately things did not work out for Goldson where he played in 27 games, 153 tackles, 9 passes defended, and only 1 interception. He was also rated as the 86th out of 87 eligible safeties in 2013 and was rated 81st in 2014. He is known as one of the harder hitting safeties in the NFL, but is the oldest player the Redskins have acquired this offseason at 30 years old. I believe Goldson can turn his career around and is an upgrade for the Redskins at free-safety. I don’t think he fit well with Tampa’s defense and will be a better fit with Washington’s. If he does perform well this season, and the Redskins decide to keep him, look for them to try to restructure his contract. But I believe this is a great trade for the Redskins because they are practically getting him for free for a year, and like I said earlier I think he can turn his career around and play at high level for a few more years.

Jeron Johnson Signs A Two Year Deal With Redskins
March 31, 2015
The Redskins signed former Seattle Seahawks safety Jeron Johnson on Monday, March 16th to a 2 year deal. Johnson Played college football at Boise State where he totaled 328 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 8 interceptions, 33 passes defended, and 3 forced fumbles. He joined the Seahawks after he went undrafted in 2011. When he signed, new Redskins GM Scot McCloughan was the Senior Personnel Executive for the Seahawks. He only started one game in his four year NFL career, but he played behind two Pro-Bowl safeties in Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor. The plan is for Johnson to start at safety, but he will still compete for the job this offseason. Scot McCloughan hopes Johnson brings the atmosphere from the “Legion of Boom” to Washington to turn their secondary around.

Redskins Sign Chris Culliver To A 4 Year Deal
March 13, 2015
The Redskins have announced they have signed former 49ers CB Chris Culliver to a 4-year deal worth $32 million. Culliver played college football at South Carolina where he played kick returner, wide receiver, free safety, and cornerback. At South Carolina he had 156 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 3 interceptions, 17 passes defended, 1 fumble recovery, and 3 forced fumbles. In 2009, Culliver almost died from complications following routine shoulder surgery and his senior season in 2010 was cut short by a pectoral muscle injury. He was picked 80th overall by the 49ers in the 2011 draft. But he has concerns off the field, in 2012 prior to the Super Bowl he had strong words about gay players in the NFL, but later apologized. In 2013 he made offensive comments about a woman on Instagram. A few months later he tore his ACL in team drills and missed the entire 2013 season. On March 28, 2014, he was arrested for misdemeanor hit and run, misdemeanor driving on a suspended license, and felony possession of brass knuckles after allegedly hitting a bicyclist with his car. So far the 2015 top Redskins CBs are: Culliver, Breeland, Hall, and Amerson.

Redskins Continuing To Bolster Their Defensive Line
March 13, 2015
The Redskins have improved their defensive line significantly by adding DT Stephen Paea and NT Terrance Knighton. Stephen Paea signed a 4 year contract with the Redskins, after originally playing with the Bears for his first 4 seasons in the NFL. Paea is 26-years old, 6’1, and weighs 300 pounds. He played college football at Oregon State where he started every game but one, had 129 total tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss, 3 passes defended, and 9 forced fumbles. At the NFL combine he recorded 49 reps in the 255lb bench press, the highest since 1999. Paea was taken with the 53rd pick in the 2011 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears. With the Bears he played in 55 of 64 games, 94 tackles, 12 sacks, 1 safety, 5 passes defended, and 2 forced fumbles. He played the exact way and with effort in early years during his career, not just the year he was becoming a free agent. Paea said he chose the ‘Skins over Dallas, Detroit, Tampa Bay, and more. He said “Other teams were offering me a little bit more money, but the way Washington would use me in their defense was the reason I chose Washington.” He said he was looking forward to more one-on-one match-ups because he faced a decent number of double teams with the Bears. Now without as many, “I can do some damage.” Source who knew Paea well from working with him says he’d be best used like a Corey Liuget from the Chargers: one gaper inside or DE in base. Stephen Paea will improve the defensive line pass rush, and should get more pressure than the line did last season. Terrance Knighton signed a one year, 4 million dollar, ‘prove it’ deal with the Redskins. Over the past two year Knighton has been considered an elite run-stuffer, and was ranked #16 on Around the NFL’s top 101 Free Agents. A lot of teams say Knighton is overweight and so the ‘Skins signed him to a one year deal to prove himself and give him some motivation to get a long term deal next season.
Kirk Cousins Is Expected To Remain With Redskins
March 9, 2015
ESPN980’s Chris Russell stated that a source close to the situation said that Kirk Cousins will stay will Washington this season and have a “chance to compete” for the starting job. He also said that he does not expect QB Colt McCoy to the Redskins next season, baring something drastic happening (like a surprise trade). Kirk Cousins took over for starting quarterback Robert Griffin III after he went down with an ankle injury in week 2 vs the Jacksonville Jaguars. Cousins played one of his best games of his career and lead the Redskins to a 41-10 win. Cousins played in 6 games during the 2014 season, and started in 5 of them. Although in week 7 he was replaced by Colt McCoy after halftime, who later lead the Redskins to a come-from-behind victory. The Redskins named Robert Griffin III the starter going into the year however during the NFL Combine. But Kirk Cousins looks for every way that he can get advantage, including working out with his head coaches brother Jon Gruden during the offseason.

Redskins terminate Defensive Lineman Barry Cofield's Contract
February 27, 2015
Barry Cofield’s agent announced via twitter that the Redskins are terminating Cofield’s contract. Barry Cofield would have had a $7.7 million cap hit this season, he had a dead cap hit of $3.6 million, so Redskins save around $4.2 million but cutting him. He missed 8 games in 2014 after only missing 1 game in previous 8 years. Cofield is a smart player, tough, and willing to be a veteran voice. Cofield was told by the Redskins the door wasn’t closed on a later return. His release could also be because of an injury situation as well, Chris Russell from ESPN980 said he heard Cofield has a labrum issue to deal with also.

Ricky Jean-Francois Signs 3 Year Deal With Redskins
February 26, 2015
Redskins have signed former Colts defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois to a 3 year deal. Deal is for $9 million, with $4 million guaranteed. The total value with incentives is $11.25 million. Jean-Francois played at LSU and was the defensive MVP in the 2008 BCS National Championship Game; he was also a member of the track and field team at LSU. In the 2009 draft he was selected in the 7th round by former 49ers GM and new Redskins GM Scout McCloughan. He has 96 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 8 passes defended in his career. His best year (statistically) came in 2014, he had 18 tackles, 3 sacks, and 4 passes defended. A lot of teams were interested in him because he has good character, a good presence in the locker room, and he can play. And according to Pro Football Focus, Ricky Jean-Francois ranked as 26th best 3-4 defensive end. That’s below Jason Hatcher but above every other Redskins defensive lineman. So the Redskins would be getting a good player at a position of need.

Dave Ragone Hired as Offensive Quality Control Coach
February 26, 2015
Redskins announced they have hired Dave Ragone as offensive quality control coach. Quality control coaches break down film, compile reports, and a lot of grunt work for position coaches, coordinators, and head coach. Ragone played quarterback at the University of Louisville, and was selected in the 3rd round of the 2003 draft by the Texans, but only started 2 games for them. He was named NFL Europe’s MVP in 2005, and won World Bowl XIII with the Berlin Thunder. He was claimed by the Cinncinati Bengals in 2006, but was then traded to the St. Louis Rams. The Rams later released him prior to the 2006 season. Ragone began his coaching career as the quarterbacks coach for the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League in 2010. He was named the wide receivers coach for the Titans in 2011 and 2 years later he was moved to QBs coach, but was later fired after the 2013 season.

Jay Grudens Combine Press Conference
February 23, 2015
The first day at the combine every coach had a 15 minute press conference, but the Redskins management had Jay Gruden show up a few minutes late so he only was able to speak for a few minutes. At the beginning of the press conference Gruden (oddly) named Robert Griffin III the starting QB going into next year. Why would he announce this in February? I don’t know. He said just a month ago that “until that position is earned, you have to have a competition. And I anticipate us having a competition in a lot of spots, and quarterback’s no different next year.” How can you decide who your starting QB will be only a month after saying that and four months before the first preseason game kicks-off? Now this doesn’t entirely mean that RGIII is the unquestioned starter week one, but it could mean that they are going into camp with RGIII as the starter and someone (whether it be Cousins, McCoy, or someone else) has to out play him to win the job (much like the Browns did last season with Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel. As for who the QBs are working with this offseason it certainly appears that Kirk Cousins is trying to get the edge, as he is working with Jay Gruden’s brother Jon. (In cases you were wondering: Robert Griffin IIII is still working with Terry Shea.) Gruden then started talking about some of the new coaches they have hired, he said Cavanaugn can help the QBs in new ways and will take a lot of stress off of McVay. He also said he likes that Fewell is a very successful DBs coach and that he needs him to develop young DBs. And to end it, Jay Gruden said new defensive line coach brings a ton of energy, and said he knocked over trash cans, and threw chairs in interview.

Redskins Re-Work DeAngelo Hall's Contract
February 22, 2015
The Redskins and CB DeAngelo Hall re-work deal to have no guaranteed money in 2015. Under the previous terms of the deal, $1 million of Hall’s $4 million salary was set to become guaranteed on February 15, but the days before the 15th they agreed to reconstruct it. The Redskins signed Hall to a 4 year contract last offseason, but was limited to only 3 games after tearing his Achilles. While Hall was recovering at his home during the season he re-injured his Achilles and had to undergo surgery again. This deal protects the Redskins and Hall, if Hall cannot fully recover or can’t return to the level he was playing at before, then this gives the Redskins flexibility to cut Hall without getting a major cap penalty. And if Hall makes the 53-man roster, he still gets the $1 million.

Redskins To Tryout Former #6 Overall Pick
February 17, 2015
Former #6 overall pick Vernon Gholston (only 28 years old today) tweeted today that he has a tryout with the Washington Redskins. In 2008 he was drafted out of Ohio State by the New York Jets. He played defensive end at Ohio State (but played OLB with the Jets) and was redshirted as a freshman after breaking his hand in the season opener. As a sophomore he was named to Second-team All-Big Ten honors while starting 13 games. Gholston had 49 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and 1 INT. In his junior season he recorded 37 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, and 14.5 sacks in 13 games. He was named an All-American and was First-team All-Big Ten. Heading into the draft he was projected to be a top 10 pick and tied to highest bench press score at the NFL combine. He was also one of only two players to record a sack against the number one overall selection Jake Long. After playing 3 seasons with the Jets he only started in 5 games, had 30 tackles, and zero sacks. After he was released by the Jets he was later signed by the Bears but was released a month later. A year later he signed with the St. Louis Rams but again was released a week later. He hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2010. He has been considered one of the biggest busts in NFL history, but looks to rebound with his tryout with the Redskins.

February 2, 2015
Redskins likely finshed hiring defensive assiatant coaches after they hired Vikings assisatant line coach Robb Akey, on Monday. New defensive coordinator Joe Barry will help coach inside and outside linebackers with linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti, so Akey should be the last addition to the defensive coaches.
